Embark on a thrilling coastal drive, mingling with the locals to uncover the charms of all three towns, in this 10th installment of our driving-around-the-coast of Hokkaido series. Starting from Iwanai Town, we cruise along the Sea of Japan.
In Iwanai, renowned for its saury fishing, we visit a venerable kamaboko (fish cake) shop with 125 years of history. Their specialty "kakuyaki" defies conventional kamaboko with a secret recipe unchanged since its inception.
On the rocky shores facing the Sea of Japan, we meet a seaweed harvester extracting precious rock seaweed. Suttsu has an aging population and labor shortages, and so we savor these robust flavors and textures of their specialty seaweed, fearing it may vanish in the near future. We indulge in a premium seaweed bento box of Suttsu Town.
This shop is no ordinary establishment; it's a cable TV station airing exclusively to local households, even producing original programs during prime time. In a surprising turn of events, Li Chang and Yurie Ono find themselves making an impromptu live appearance. What broadcasts await, and how will the townsfolk react? Join us to find out!
