Coastline Adventure Drive - Iwanai, Suttsu, Rankoshi Edition

April 13,2024 OA

Embark on a thrilling coastal drive, mingling with the locals to uncover the charms of all three towns, in this 10th installment of our driving-around-the-coast of Hokkaido series. Starting from Iwanai Town, we cruise along the Sea of Japan.
In Iwanai, renowned for its saury fishing, we visit a venerable kamaboko (fish cake) shop with 125 years of history. Their specialty "kakuyaki" defies conventional kamaboko with a secret recipe unchanged since its inception.
On the rocky shores facing the Sea of Japan, we meet a seaweed harvester extracting precious rock seaweed. Suttsu has an aging population and labor shortages, and so we savor these robust flavors and textures of their specialty seaweed, fearing it may vanish in the near future. We indulge in a premium seaweed bento box of Suttsu Town.
This shop is no ordinary establishment; it's a cable TV station airing exclusively to local households, even producing original programs during prime time. In a surprising turn of events, Li Chang and Yurie Ono find themselves making an impromptu live appearance. What broadcasts await, and how will the townsfolk react? Join us to find out!

Coastline Adventure Drive - to Mori Town

April 06,2024 OA

From April onwards, Love Hokkaido continues its adventures with the dynamic duo: self-proclaimed Hokkaido expert Li Chang from China and Sapporo native Yurie Ono, as they uncover the undiscovered charms of Hokkaido.
This time, they visit Mori Town, known for its seafood like “ikameshi” and scallops. But hold on, there's a surprising twist - word has it that "crocodiles" are the latest sensation! Intrigued, they pay a visit and find a lively bunch of school kids just out of class. What could the mystery of the "crocodiles" be?
Next stop: one of our viewers sent us a recommendation to visit Shikabe Town. At a place called "Maido," they discover a takoyaki joint run by a lovely older lady originally from Osaka. She serves up a secret takoyaki recipe with a crispy exterior and fluffy interior - a steal at 500 yen for 15 pieces, using local octopus.
Then, at the fishing port in Sawara District, they stumble upon the new local specialty: the giant snow crab. Since about 2 years ago, this crab has been a bit of a nuisance due to its abundance in sea waters, even cutting fishing nets, but this crab turns out to be surprisingly delicious. With local sushi chefs already experimenting with new dishes, our MC duo indulges in a variety of innovative sushi creations.
