≪Feature≫LOVE HOKKAIDO SPECIAL: The Hokkaido Dream Game Show, Part 1

Five auditions were held in different countries and regions around Asia, to select a total of 10 participants split in five teams, each contestant very eager to show their great love for Hokkaido. While they travel all over Hokkaido, they are challenged to quizzes and games. The team that wins the most points is awarded the grand title of "Hokkaido Dream Game Show" Winner! Their first stop is Hakodate. The night view seen from the top of Mt. Hakodate is said to be one of Japan's top three major night views. The first stage for these participants is a popular favorite, the Hakodate Morning Market. Fresh seafood as well as processed goods easy to bring home are displayed in the 250 market shops. Stage 1 begins in the center of the market; the team with the lowest points are chosen to make a Hakodate specialty "Ikameshi", and the team with the most points in first place is awarded with the privilege of lighting up the large Christmas Tree, a symbol of the Hakodate Christmas Fantasy. For the second stage, we drive 4 hours from Hakodate to Rusutsu Resort. In the summer, it has thrills and rides and even golf for the whole family to enjoy. In winter? Rusutsu is a winter playground with all the pleasures of winter sports available for you to enjoy; a full on activity-filled leading Resort of Hokkaido. The contestants, most of whom are unfamiliar with snow, are challenged with a harsh blizzard of a battle ahead. Which team will take the lead? This week we introduce some fascinating and always enjoyable, winter sports. Located in Sapporo City is Mt. Okura Ski Jump Stadium. The stadium was used for the 1972 Winter Olympics. There you can find a winter sports museum, which not only has a display of various sports and notable awards and historical information of the Winter Olympics, but it also has activities that you can try for yourself! You can feel like the professional athletes too, by taking part in these simulations. Last November, MC Li Qiang took a chance at the Broom Ball Championship Games held in Tomakomai City. Have you heard of Broom Ball? Another popular sport is curling; did you know you could try it right in Sapporo City? Dōgin Curling Stadium can be used all year long to experience the fascinating winter sport of curling; beginners are very welcome! With the coaching of a former Olympic curling athlete, MCs Li Qiang and Isis battle on ice!

We venture off to find out why these school lunches are so delicious, and why children love them so much! The school lunch system plays an important part in the local production and consumption of foods. It’s not just about food! School lunch is also considered a time for kids to learn manners, such as using Japanese chopsticks, and more. Some schools have lunches that feature ingredients famous in their district. For example, in Sapporo City they serve "Ghengis Khan", in Hakodate City they serve "Ika-meshi" AKA rice stuffed squid, in Kushiro City they serve "Kujira no Tatsuta-age" which is deep-fried soy flavored whale. Wow! This week, Li Qiang and Isis visit Sapporo City Shin-Kotoni Nishi Elementary School, to enjoy a fun and yummy lunch time with the children. This school’s lunch is so good, it was even chosen as a representative of Hokkaido’s school lunches at a nationwide school lunch tournament. You’ll wish they prepare these lunches for adults, too!

As you can imagine, carrying fresh food souvenirs with you as you travel would be quite a hassle! This time we are introducing the “International Souvenir Delivery Service”. This is a frozen delivery service which you can send fresh products directly to your home upon purchase. In Hokkaido there are now 80 stores that provide this delivery service. In 2016, there will be a new bullet train line opening between Hokkaido and Aomori prefecture, making it possible to travel the distance within about one hour. HTB announcer Mr. Yoda and MC Li Qiang depart for a mini vacation. The city Hachinohe is proudly known for its seafood unloading port along the Pacific Ocean front. Hachinohe Asaguru is a value plan which includes taxi fares, morning markets and Sento public baths. After searching at the Mutsuminato Station Front Hachinohe Gyosai Market Place for a delicious breakfast, we head off to enjoy some hot spring baths at a long standing Sento called Yanagiyu. At Ajino Kaiodo, we enjoy printing our faces on a popular Hachinohe specialty, Nanbu Senbei; what a treat! Announcer Yoda and Li Qiang then jump on to a fishing boat at Tanesashi Kaigan to enjoy some fishing with Japanese fishermen, and indulge into fisherman’s cooking once back on shore. After crossing the Tsugaru channel to Hokkaido, they arrive at Hokkaido prefecture’s southernmost town, Matsumae. You can disguise yourself with Kachu costumes at the Matsumaehan-Yashiki, a place where the Edo period atmosphere is relived with great fun. The Kitamaesenn-Matsumae Road Stop holds good stock of their town’s pride catch of tuna, all year round. The 2 will head to the Onsen-Ryokan Yano long-established since its founding in 1951, to enjoy a wonderful dinner generously filled with Tuna delights.
