Did you know that Yakumo Town is the birthplace of the iconic Hokkaido souvenir, the "wooden bear carving"? (There are various theories about its origin.) And it's celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, marking a significant milestone! Nowadays, these bears come in various expressions, perfectly fitting the times, and some tourists even have their favorite picks among them.
Our journey leads us to visit the farms producing Yakumo Town's specialty, the "soft white onions." It's the perfect season for them, so we couldn't resist tasting them fresh from the harvest! What do you think they taste like?
When it comes to the specialties of the Kumaishi area on the Sea of Japan side, "abalone" stands out. We heard about a place offering great eats for an unbelievable price, so we couldn't resist checking it out – a lively sushi restaurant run by a cheerful couple. What appeared before our eyes was truly a "mountain" of fresh seafood, living up to its reputation, and the price? Surprisingly reasonable!
