Route 36 is a long road that stretches from Sapporo and through many regions full of areas just waiting to be explored.
Our first stop this week along the 36 is Tomakomai, which is famous for surf clams. We visit the “Puratto Minato Market” to try the delicacy raw, on a bowl of rice, and in Japanese style curry. Those are just some of the ways to eat this delicious seafood.
Our next stop is Shiraoi Town. We first visit the “Shiraoi Poroto Kotan Ainu Museum” to try playing a traditional Ainu instrument, the Mukkuri, a great way to learn about Hokkaido’s deep rooted culture.
For a break along the road, we park at “Hashimoto Coffee Shop” along Route 36. The shop has a rich menu offering Shiraoi Beef and cod roe; of course, we have to try it!
At last, our long drive takes us to Noboribetsu, famous for Onsen and the “Hell Valley” active volcano. We look for something special, and find ourselves at “Noboribetsu Marine Park Nixe”, thrilled to meet penguins walking along the park grounds in front of us! The park offers a variety of mystical shows to introduce the beauty of fish underwater.
Does the drive along Route 36 continue? You bet! Be sure to tune in again next week.
